Lung 2 Yunmen (Cloud Gate) 云门

Classifications:

  • Front Shu of the Breast
  • One of the "59 Piercings" for Clearing Heat (Su Wen, Ch. 61)

Location & Needling:

  • Location: On the anter-lateral aspect of the chest, below the lateral extremity of the clavicle, 6 cun lateral to the midline, in the center of the hollow of the delto-pectoral triangle
  • Needling Technique:
    • Modern Method: Transverse-oblique insertion 0.5 - 1 cun.
    • Classical Needling:
      • "The Taiyin usually has much Qi and little Blood" (Su Wen, Ch. 24), implying this channel should normally be needled.
      • "The hand Yin and Yang receive their Qi via nearby paths so their Qi arrives swiftly. The depth of piercing must not exceed 2 fen and must not remain inserted for longer than one exhalation" (Ling Shu, Ch. 12).
      • "It is needled to a depth of seven fen and warmed with moxibustion five cones. Unduly deep insertion causes counterflow breathing" (Huangfu Mi, Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing, 3rd Century).
  • Warnings:
    • Deep perpendicular needling or oblique insertion carries a substantial risk of pneumothorax

TCM Actions:

  • Disperses fullness in the chest.
  • Promotes the descending of Lung Qi and stops cough

Indications:

Lung & Respiratory Conditions:

  • Cough, wheezing, asthma, dyspnea with inability to lie down, shortness of breath.
  • Oppressive and agitated sensation in the chest, heat in the chest, pain and fullness​
  • Upsurging of Qi to the Heart, sudden pain in the Heart and abdomen.

Musculoskeletal & Pain Conditions:

  • Pain of the lateral costal region and back, pain of the back and shoulders.
  • Pain of the shoulder with inability to raise the arm, pain of the supraclavicular fossa.

Other Conditions:

  • Circulatory Issues: Interrupted pulse that cannot be felt at the cun position.
  • Throat Conditions: Throat Painful Obstruction (Hou Bi), goitre.
  • Chronic Conditions: Injury by Cold causing persistent heat in the limbs

Comments:

Compared with LU-1 Zhongfu, LU-2 shares similar functions with LU-1 but is less potent in its effects. It is more frequently used for local musculoskeletal conditions, especially shoulder and chest pain​.

Point Combinations:

  • For Lung Heat → Combine with LU-5 Chize (clears Lung Heat and regulates Water passages).
  • For chest tightness due to Phlegm → Combine with ST-40 Fenglong.
  • For emotional agitation & rebellious Lung Qi → Combine with PC-6 Neiguan (calms the Shen and descends Qi).
  • For shoulder pain & restriction → Combine with LI-15 Jianyu.
